This coming Tuesday, August 28th, is Primary Election Day in Arizona. You, the voter, will select party candidates to run in the November General Election. Those candidates range from the Governor’s office down to your local Justice of the Peace. Perhaps the most important is your local city council representative. Glendale’s councilmembers have a major and direct impact on your daily life from deciding city sales tax rates to the creation of new parks in Glendale. Your district council representative will be decided in the Primary Election on Tuesday. Since Glendale’s races are non-partisan and there are only two candidates each for the Barrel and Ocotillo Districts, whoever receives the most votes will be your councilmember. They will not continue on to the General Election in November. The Cholla District has but one candidate, Vice Mayor Tolmachoff. She will automatically continue to be the Cholla Councilmember no matter what the vote total.
If you remain undecided I urge you to call the candidates directly and ask them questions about their positions on issues of importance to you. Here are their phone numbers:
- Emmanuel Allen 602-488-0147
- Bart Turner 623-487-3808
- Ray Strahl 623-341-7614
- Jamie Aldama 623-930-2249 (I could only find the main city council office number)

Joyce, I am surprised the Council is still supporting Allen for the Ocotillo district after the large article in the pullout section of the Arizona Republic stating how he had lied to the City on the financial status of his non-profit organization. Seeing as he is receiving free use of O’Neil buildings, to me that would really put out a red flag on how he could be trusted to decide on financial issues for the citizens of Glendale. Was this article in error? I never saw anything mentioning it anywhere if it was being discredited.
Dayna, Allen had to submit his financials to the city. The city, in performing due diligence, had to verify not just his representations but that of the two other bidders. Jamie Aldama supported one of the bidders, Mickey Nunez. Knowing Allen was running, in an sttempt to thwart his bid, Jamie used Allen’s financials but neglected to point out that the city had vetted Allen. The media, which as we all know sensationalizes everything, picked up Jamie’s allegations and ran with it.
So Ms. Clark, are you suggesting AZ Republic is exaggerating the truth, or flat out lying about Mr. Allen? Are you also suggesting that Mr Allen’s disclosure of his financial challenges was because he was under pressure by COG mandate? I don’t see how you relate Dayna’s question to Mr. Aldama, but since you chose to “throw the dog in the ring,” How exactly does Aldama fit in this puzzle? Are you suggesting he corroborated with AZ Republic to defame Mr. Allen? So back to the initial question, Did AZ Republic lie? I do agree with you 100% that media has a tendency to embellish, but Mr Allen is his own detriment when he makes comments such as, “…there’s reason that five out of the seven Council Members have endorsed me I’m pretty sure it’s not because of my money management skills” why fan the flames?
Felipe, My intent was not “to fan the flames” as you put it but rather that there is a lot of “inside baseball” that occurs during an election season. Mr. Aldama’s campaign manager, Chuck Foy, initially made a Freedom of Information Request regarding Mr. Allen. On the basis of the material received Mr. Aldama opposed Mr. Allen’s contract with the city. That public opposition at a council voting meeting led to the Arizona Republic story as Mr. Aldama and Mr. Foy knew it would. I won’t say the Republic lied but I will say they ‘ginned up’ the story. Did Mr. Aldama collaborate with the Republic? I’d say ‘no’ but did Mr. Foy, his campaign manager? Probably.
I was referring to Mr Allen fanning his own flame with the unsolicited comment. sorry for the mislead… and yes “A LOT” of inside baseball. unfortunately that’s politics.
Joyce,
There are two additional precincts in the Barrel District that you do not have listed above. They are
the BERYL and CARON precints and they will both vote at the GLENDALE CHRISTIAN CHURCH, 9661 N 59TH AVE, GLENDALE, AZ 85302 in the FELLOWSHIP HALL.
Thank you,
Bart Turner
Thank you Bart. I will add them right now. Unfortunately, I am not as familiar with the Barrel district as my own, Yucca. Thanks for catching that.
