On January 29, 2015, just days before the Super Bowl,Glendale’s Mayor Jerry Weiers got his 2 tickets to Sunday’s game. Weiers had said publicly that to see a Super Bowl played in his hometown,Glendale, was on his bucket list. Mitchell Modell, CEO of Modell’s Sporting Goods, a chain located in the Northeast, bought Mayor Weiers the 2 tickets from the NFL. Weiers received them today when he attended a Friar’s Roast of Terry Bradshaw at the Arizona Biltmore.
Correction: Weiers made clear that the face value of the Super Bowl tickets would be matched by a personal donation to the Shriners. The Roast attended by Mayor Weiers did not require tickets as he made a brief appearance to accept the Super Bowl tickets and then left for other committments.
Now we are two for two. In 2008 former Mayor Scruggs publicly whined about not being invited to the Super Bowl. The NFL offered her 2 tickets at a face value of $700 each. She turned them down saying she couldn’t afford them. Shortly thereafter the Arizona Host Committee gave her 2 free tickets.
It is embarrassing that 2 successive Glendale mayors have literally begged, publicly, for Super Bowl tickets. Is there no pride?
By the way, 99% of the Valley’s elected officials have not purchased tickets even when available and most are not attending the Super Bowl. The only acknowledged officials going are Governor Ducey, Senator McCain and Representative Ruben Gallego and his wife Kate. All paid for their tickets. Way to go, Mayor, past or present.

Councilpersons in Phx and Scottsdale are taking advantage of ticket offers to their cities. Wierers also donated an amount equal to the price of the tickets to a local charity. In reality this is much ado about nothing. The media seems to enjoy bashing anything Glendale. Funny AZC (or you for that matter) hasnt brought up the improving finacial situation in Glendale or the improved bond status for the COG. The lack of coverage or comments of thse issues proves other parties are only interested in throwing darts and not really concerned about the well being of the COG
Jim,
The City is rife with malfeasance.
I think the ” …. concerned about the well being of the COG” needs to start at the top. Unfortunately, it does not.
Management takes care of management. Period.
If anyone has helped, it is the frontline employees that have helped the City’s financial situation improve.
But then management would not know that. They do not come off their royal cloud and mingle with the common folk.
“The city has found stronger financial footing since then, and its bond rating has improved markedly, but not without having to raise taxes, trim 25% of the municipal workforce, cut back on paving projects, and reduce hours at municipal swimming pools and libraries. The 9.2% sales tax that shoppers and diners pay in Glendale is among the highest in the state.”

from the associated press,
They improved the bond rating by doing the above. Hardly heart warming or a true good news story. If the press did cover those items as you desired, it would only really be more eye opening sobriety as to what it took and the cost to city services to achieve it.
Weiers the Whiner got his tickets.
Oh, and he donated the value of the tickets to a charity so that makes it all okay. Bet you his tickets are NOT in the nosebleed section.
And do we know what the value of those tickets are?
Would that be face value or scalper value?
Just a bunch of poppycock.
BTW –
The Super Bowl is on my bucket list also. Can I get a pair of tickets?
(snivel, snivel, whine, whine)
